THE MEMORY OF LAW. The law of your people.

Preserve the memory. Understand the territory.

The history of the Óbidos Lagoon is also written on its vessels, in the hands of those who built them, in the fishing gear and in the daily gestures of generations of fishermen.

Casa das Bateiras seeks to preserve and share this heritage, bringing together images, documents, objects and memories that reveal the importance of the lagoon in the life of the communities of Foz do Arelho, Nadadouro and all the surrounding territory.

More than remembering the past, this space invites us to understand how the relationship between people and water continues to define the landscape, culture and identity of this place.

Traditional fishing in Óbidos Lagoon

Caldas da Rainha · Obidos Lagoon

The Óbidos Lagoon has been, for generations, a place of work, sustenance and identity for the communities that lived from its waters. Traditional crawlers, fishing gear and knowledge handed down between generations are part of a heritage deeply linked to the history of this territory.

This historical photograph documents the daily life of fishermen in the lagoon, revealing the relationship between boats, manual work and the landscape. A visual testimony of practices and ways of life that contributed to build the maritime memory of the region.

Sculpture · Patrícia Ribeiro

Penedo Furado is a sculpture by Patrícia Ribeiro, ceramist and sculptor whose artistic practice finds in Nature its main source of inspiration.

The work evokes the organic forms of the landscape, exploring volumes, textures and irregularities that refer to natural matter. His presence at the Jaime Umbelino House-Museum establishes a dialogue between contemporary creation, territory and the sensory relationship with materials.

Integrated in the permanent exhibition of the Jaime Umbelino House-Museum, in Foz do Arelho, the sculpture invites the observation of forms and the discovery of beauty present in natural imperfection.

Born and raised in Proença-a-Nova, in Beira Baixa, Patrícia Ribeiro develops her work from the studio in Foz do Arelho. Since 2017, he has deepened his practice in ceramics through courses and training, participating in individual and collective exhibitions.

His work is characterized by the exploration of organic forms, tactile textures and colors inspired by Nature. Its creative approach is based on two key ideas: ‘Nature at home’, which seeks to integrate natural elements into everyday life, and ‘Perfection is in the naturally imperfect’, which values the authenticity and uniqueness of each piece.

The chutes are more than boats. They are testimonies of a secular relationship between the local communities, the Óbidos Lagoon and the sea. To preserve this heritage is to protect the knowledge, techniques, stories and people that bring the maritime culture of the region to life.

Heritage lives in people.

Each vessel keeps traces of a way of life. Each tool reveals a learned gesture. Each testimony carries a memory that we do not want to miss. The Casa das Bateiras values the people who built this story and seeks to create a space where their experiences, knowledge and memories can be shared with future generations.
