JAIME JORGE UMBELINO · 1916–2007 Life, work and legacy

Jaime Jorge Umbelino was one of the outstanding figures of 20th-century cultural life in the Western region.

He was born in Foz do Arelho, on March 5, 1916, and although he accompanied his family to Torres Vedras as a child, he maintained throughout his life a deep connection to the land where he was born.

A writer, linguist, teacher, chronicler and man of culture, he dedicated his life to teaching, the Portuguese language, literature, local history and participation in community life.

The land where he was born

Foz do Arelho was always present in the life and imagination of Jaime Umbelino. It was here that he was born and where, throughout his life, he maintained a deep connection to the land, to the people and to the memory of the community.His holiday home in Foz do Arelho remained a place of connection to his origins and would, by will, be left to the local Parish Council. It is in this house that today is the House-Museum Jaime Umbelino · CEF.The relationship with the land also finds expression in his work, namely in Foz do Arelho in Legend and History.

Teacher, writer and knowledgeable in the Portuguese language

Jaime Umbelino graduated in Romance Philology at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, after starting law studies.His professional life was deeply linked to teaching. He was a teacher of Portuguese and French and later dedicated himself to the private teaching of Portuguese and Latin, an activity through which he accompanied and trained thousands of students from the region. He has written numerous articles on language, literature, history and culture, many of which have been published in the regional press.

A life written in many pages

Jaime Umbelino had an extensive collaboration with the regional press. He was the founder of the newspaper Badaladas He collaborated with several publications, leaving a vast work dedicated to the Portuguese language, history, popular culture and the identity of the region. The Viewpoint, The Portuguese Language, The Popular Quadra on the Tiles, Ancient Muse e Foz do Arelho in Legend and History, among other works and works published throughout his career.

A man deeply attached to the community

Jaime Umbelino's activity extended far beyond teaching and writing.He actively participated in the cultural and social life of Torres Vedras, collaborating in cultural initiatives, festivities, associations and various social and assistance actions.In 1989, the Municipality of Torres Vedras distinguished him with the Medal of Municipal Merit, silver degree, recognizing the relevance of his professional activity and his collaboration with the community.

Literature in the Carnivals of Torres

A house that keeps a life

Jaime Umbelino died in Torres Vedras, on February 17, 2007. In his will, he left to the Parish Council of Foz do Arelho his holiday home and some of his assets, with the desire that this space be preserved and placed at the service of the community.This legacy gave rise to the Jaime Umbelino House-Museum, in Foz do Arelho.Today, the house keeps alive the connection between a person, a place and a memory. What was a private space became a space of culture, knowledge, encounter and creation, also giving way to the CEF · Photography Experimentation Center.

Another home for your legacy

In Torres Vedras, the memory of Jaime Umbelino also continues in Factory of Stories - Casa Jaime Umbelino, From the house and estate associated with Jaime Umbelino, Fábrica das Histórias has become a space dedicated to words, memories, ideas, images and stories, keeping alive the connection between his life, his work and the community.
